There are many people who know what the annual Comic Con is. And if you don’t, it’s an annual multi genre convention held in several locations throughout the world, and includes pop culture, animation, video games, comic books, and much more*. So of course it features a lot about gaming. I’ve always liked gaming as much as the next person, but this year was really special. At this year’s San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), gamer designers and developers received a lot more respect. And along with plenty of other things, this year’s Comic Con made me want to get a game design degree.
There are a lot of good reasons to get a game design degree. If one is good at designing games, one has an opportunity to make it a career. If you make it big, you could even start your own company that designs games of all kinds. How cool is that? And at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, guys who had made it big in gaming were actually invited to the show. I especially enjoyed the Watch Dogs Panel where I got to see interviews with Kevin Shortt, lead designer of the game, and Aisha Tyler, actress in the game. It was awesome! Of course, these guys are the best of the best, but still it gives the little guy some hope that one day they too can get some recognition.
Comic Con is always a big deal. What started out as a simple comic book convention has grown into so much more. Now, so many genres of media are represented there. And thankfully, gaming and game design is one of them. Game design is getting more and more popular as technology advances and more people are using all different kinds of games.
This year’s Comic Con has influenced me to go for the Game Design degree in many ways. I’ve always thought they were cool, but after paying close attention to the convention, I realized that it could be more than just a degree. There are opportunities available for people with these degrees, and there are ways to grow and move up in your career. If you are ambitious you can even start your own company or create original games yourself.
Different kinds of games are popular now days. There are video games, games for smartphones, computer games, and so many more types of games. With this degree I’ll be learning the skills needed to create and really design these games the way I want to design them. And there are plenty of other gaming aspects that I will learn to design.
There were a few gaming programs that were actually offering information at Comic Con. It depends on where you are, but in New York the NYC Comic Con site had information about their game design degree that I found very helpful. The information was presented in a new way, which I really liked. Plus you got to see other examples of gaming all around the convention that served as an example of something people with a game design degree may also one day be able to make.
Obviously getting any degree may not be easy. And degrees like this one that requires math and basic programming skills may be particularly challenging. Having some artistic ability is nice too. But I think anyone with a passion for gaming may be able to strive to get this degree. And if you aren’t sure, watch some videos of the convention and next year’s will be here sooner than later too.
So all in all, I don’t know if I would have chosen to go for a game design degree had it not been for the Comic Con. It has inspired me to see what other game designers have created. I’m happy and confident in my decision now. So if you are interested in a game design degree, do your research and find the best school for you to earn your degree and who knows, maybe someday you’ll be featured at Comic Con.
